The Story of Heron Hill Winery

The Beginning: A Chance Meeting

In August 1969, in Denver, Colorado, John and Jo met at a college party. The sun was shining, the music was lively, and a chance meeting over Ripple wine sparked a lifelong partnership. They’ve been married for over 53 years, and their journey has been as rich and vibrant as the wines they create.

Inspired by the Land

In 1971, while working in a neighbor’s vineyard, John found his calling. The rhythm of the work and the sense of community inspired him to pursue a career in winemaking. In 1972, John and Jo planted their first vineyard, starting with Chardonnay, Riesling, and Seyval Blanc. Despite initial challenges, their passion led them to establish Heron Hill Winery on Keuka Lake.

Growth and Innovation

By 2000, Heron Hill had grown significantly, with a new retail facility designed by Charles Warren. The winery’s architecture reflects the area’s history, combining elements unique to the Finger Lakes. Heron Hill is renowned for its cool climate Rieslings, including their award-winning Ingle Vineyard Riesling.

A Commitment to Quality

Today, Heron Hill continues to produce high-quality wines, maintaining a personal touch in their vineyards. Their dedication to excellence has earned them numerous awards and recognition as one of the top tasting rooms in the world by Travel & Leisure magazine.
